Driver identified in hit-and-run crash that killed pedestrian in Freeland

Investigators identified the driver they believe is responsible for the death of Scott Severson.

Investigators identified the driver they believe is responsible for the March 29 hit-and-run death of 67-year-old Scott Severson in Freeland, according to the Island County Sheriff’s Office.

Michael Taylor, also a Freeland resident, was booked and released from jail April 2 on suspicion of violating a state law regarding the “duty in case of personal injury or death or damage to attended vehicle or other property.”

Under the charge, which is a Class B felony, Taylor is accused of failing to stop after striking and killing Severson, who had been walking on Lancaster Road near Wahl Road.

Taylor’s car, a maroon 2014 Ford Explorer, was seized as evidence.

The sheriff’s office reports that the investigation is ongoing and complex. Island County detectives are working with the State Patrol to complete an analysis and reconstruction of the incident. Due to the time needed to complete the work, Taylor was released from custody pending the filing of formal charges.

Taylor is cooperating with the investigation, the sheriff’s office reported. He may face additional charges once the investigation is complete.

Anyone who may have information regarding the investigation is asked to contact the Island County Sheriff’s Office via the ICOM dispatch center at 360-679-9567 or via email at tips@islandcountywa.gov.

Many South Whidbey residents grieved the tragic death of Severson, an unhoused man known for his gentle ways and kind heart. He had been camping outside since losing his travel trailer in a fire.
