Unable to generate much offense to support a strong defensive game, the Coupeville High School softball team lost 2-1 to visiting Klahowya Wednesday, April 29.

Coupeville scored first when McKayla Bailey singled and then scored on Hailey Hammer’s double in the fourth inning.

Klahowya (3-1, 7-5) scored both its runs in the fifth on a single and two doubles.

Errors have troubled the Wolves all season, but Coupeville played a clean defensive game in the close loss.

Among the defensive gems in the game were a throw by catcher Lauren Rose to gun down a runner at second base, running catches in the outfield by Hope Lodell and Tiffany Briscoe and a steady game at third by Hammer.

Pitchers Bailey and Katrina McGranahan combined to slow the Eagles offense, which put up nine runs on the Wolves earlier this season.

“We were 100 percent better of a team then how we played on Monday (a 15-2 loss to Chimacum),” coach Deanna Rafferty said, “and I feel like this is one of those losses we can feel good about. The girls had a great defensive game. It’s the same tune though, we’re lacking on offense and need to pick it up. We play Port Townsend on Friday and are looking forward to win.”

Coupeville travels to Port Townsend (0-4, 0-8) for the 4:15 p.m. game. The Wolves topped the Redhawks 19-12 and 8-2 earlier this season.
