A Coupeville woman is facing a felony charge for driving off the road Jan. 3 and causing a collision that injured a 9-year-old passenger, court documents indicate.

Prosecutors charged Karen D. Campbell, 48, in Island County Superior Court May 9 with vehicular assault.

According to a Washington State Patrol report, Campbell drove from Lake Stevens in a 2007 GMC pickup and was on Zylstra Road when the accident occurred just after midnight.

She drove the truck across the oncoming lane, went off road, struck a sign, traveled across a driveway and struck a large tree, the report states.

A 9-year-old boy in the truck was seriously injured. He was transported to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, where he was treated for a lacerated spleen, pulmonary contusions and a pneumothorax.

A deputy responding to the accident said in his report he found prescription pills in the truck and in Campbell’s purse.

A sample of Campbell’s blood was taken at the scene and sent to the Washington State Patrol Crime Lab for testing.

Toxicology results allegedly showed the presence of Diazapam, Nordiazepam, Oxazepam, Quetiapine, Oxycodone and methadone, the report indicates.

If convicted on the charge, Campbell could face from one to nine months in jail under the standard sentencing range.
