Coupeville to send 6 to state meet | Track

Six members of the Coupeville High School track team earned trips to the state meet with strong performances at the District 3 1A finals Friday and Saturday, May 22 and 23, at Belfair's North Mason High School.

Six members of the Coupeville High School track team earned trips to the state meet with strong performances at the District 3 1A  finals Friday and Saturday, May 22 and 23, at Belfair’s North Mason High School.

The Wolves produced a bucket load of personal bests at the meet and finished with two district champions.

The top two in each event qualified for the state meet, which is May 28-30 at Eastern Washington University in Cheney.

Junior Dalton Martin won the boys discus in 139-01, and sophomore Skyler Lawrence took the girls shot put with a throw of 30-05.

Joining them at state will be senior Marisa Etzell, juniors Makana Stone and Sylvia Hurlburt and sophomore Lauren Grove.

Stone was the only Coupeville athlete to qualify for state last spring, where she placed second in the 400 meters.

Stone will return in the 400 after placing second at district in 59.18.

Stone, Etzell, Hurlburt and Grove also finished second in the 4×100 (51.4) and 4×200 relays (1:48.73).

In addition to winning the discus, Martin placed third in the shot put (41-10.25); Lawrence also added a third, tossing the discus 89-06.

Stone was fourth (27.29), Hurlburt fifth (27.39) and Etzell eighth (28.49) in the 200.

Hurlburt ran fourth in the 100 (13.53).

Freshman Lauren Bayne placed sixth in the high jump (4-02) and eighth in the 3,200 (13:00.63), while classmate Abby Parker took seventh in the 800 (2:42.62).

Sophomore Naika Hallam finished seventh in the javelin (76-08).

In the boys events, junior Jared Helmstadter placed fourth in the 200 (23.86), while sophomore Conner Thompson took fourth in the triple jump (37-08) and fifth in the high jump (5-04).

In team scoring, Bellevue Christian won both the boys (127 points) and girls (143) meets.

The Coupeville boys were seventh out of nine teams with 31 points. The girls were also seventh with 63 points.
