Coupeville student serves as page in Olympia

Heather Fakkema, a ninth-grader at Coupeville High School, served as a legislative page in the state House of Representatives in Olympia from Feb. 11-15. Fakkema was sponsored by Rep. Barry Sehlin, R-Oak Harbor, right, shown with George Washington. As a page, Fakkema observed the Legislature in action and was responsible for delivering messages and documents to legislators in their offices, committee hearings and the House chamber during floor sessions. To become a page, applicants must have a legislative sponsor and be between the ages of 14 and 17. Pages are required to hold a grade point average of C-plus or better, and must obtain written permission from their parents and school. Fakkema, 14, plays high school volleyball and is a JV basketball cheerleader. She is the daughter of Terri Fakkema of Coupeville and Fred Fakkema of Lacey.
