The town of Coupeville will spend several thousand dollars this spring on new trees that will be planted in parks and alongside two streets.

Town officials have set aside $3,800 in the general fund to plant more trees in Lions Park, Town Park and along First Street and Wilkes Street.

Mayor Nancy Conard said Tuesday staff has been meeting with an arborist and discussions are still taking place whether to plant larger and fewer trees in those locations or to plant smaller and a greater number of trees. She expects the new trees would be planted sometime in March.

“One of the things we’ll have done is to have them professionally planted,” Conard said during Tuesday’s Coupeville Town Council meeting.

She noted several existing trees placed in Lions Park, located near the Island County campus, weren’t properly planted and as a result are in poor condition.

“Some trees in Lions Park were planted too deep and the roots didn’t develop,” Conard told the council.

The town has made efforts recently to improve the tree coverage within city limits. It’s developing a tree ordinance that includes language for a heritage tree program. That program would provide owners of identified trees with help of an arborist for assistance.
