Church Notes

Here's what's happening at Whidbey churches and places of worship.

The cause, meaning and importance of dreams and nightmares will be discussed at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, May 4 at LIFETREE CAFE. The program, titled “Dreams and Nightmares: The Science Behind the Stories of Your Mind,” features a filmed interview with Dr. William Moorcroft, author of “Understanding Sleep and Dreaming.” In the interview, Moorcroft explains that sleep is critical for our brains to function and dreams are a way for the mind to organize and process information. “There are different components in our brain, and when we’re awake, they function one way,” Moorcroft says. “When we sleep, that functional organization greatly changes. Sleep is not a waste of time; it is a reorganization of the brain.” In the episode, Moorcroft also discusses the cause of recurring dreams and nightmares. Admission to the 60-minute event is free. Lifetree Café is located at 540 SE Pioneer Way, Oak Harbor. Lifetree Café is a place where people gather for conversation about life and faith in a casual, comfortable setting. Questions about Lifetree may be directed to Chrissie at 360-679-3431 or office@gracebythesea.org

“The Healing Power of Unselfishness,” an hour-long presentation by speaker Lois Carlson, is at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 7, at the FIRST CHURCH OF CHRIST SCIENTIST in Oak Harbor. Carlson will discuss how she overcame personal issues like suicidal tendencies and drug addiction; she has devoted her entire 2016 lecture series to this topic. Carlson learned that through helping others, she was protected from self-absorption and, instead, became absorbed in her own healing practice. Carlson has been working in the healing ministry of Christian Science for 40 years and is a published author who teaches a course on Christian Science in Chicago. During her talk, Carlson will challenge audience members to think beyond themselves and consider what media sources they are allowing to influence their thinking. This talk is free and all are welcome. Parking and child care are provided.
