Two 16-year-old boys who doused a live chicken in gas and threw it into a bonfire on Camano Island were recently sentenced to detention and community service.

One of the boys, a Stanwood resident, pleaded guilty in Island County Superior Court July 18 to second-degree animal cruelty. The other teenager, a Camano resident, pleaded guilty to the same charge July 21.

Both boys were sentenced to seven days in juvenile detention, a year of community supervision and 100 hours of community service. In addition, they both need to get a mental health evaluation and comply with any recommendation.

An investigator at an animal welfare group provided the sheriff’s office with a video of the chicken torture.

According to Sheriff Mark Brown, the video shows “the live chicken being thrown into a bonfire, drenched in gasoline and beaten with a pitchfork.”

The flaming chicken runs out of the fire and the teenagers pour more gas on the bird.

Laughter can be heard in the background.

Animal Control Officer Carol Barnes and Lt. Jeff Myers investigated the case and arrested the two teenage boys.

The incident occurred during the teenagers’ spring break this year.

The boys shared the video with friends but don’t know who posted it on Twitter, according to Barnes.
