Butler takes over OHHS girls swim program

Jenny Butler is the Oak Harbor High School girls swim team’s fifth head coach since 2010.

Jenny Butler is the Oak Harbor High School girls swim team’s fifth head coach since 2010.

She took over the position recently when former coach Erin Bull moved out of the area.

While the coaches have changed, one thing has remained constant: the Wildcats keep winning.

The last time Oak Harbor lost to a Wesco North foe was during the 2011-12 season.

Butler has worked as a counselor for the Oak Harbor School District for 10 years and decided it was time to give coaching a try.

“I love swimming, I love the sport,” she said. “It is so good for you, and you can swim for your whole life.”

Butler swam competitively for Newport High School in Bellevue and for the University of Nebraska.

She said her competitive days were “a great experience,” adding, “I made many friendships.”

Those factors convinced Butler to apply for the Oak Harbor job.

“I thought it would be a great challenge.”

Practices for the fall season began Monday, Aug. 22.

So far “the girls have been great,” Butler said. “Captain Maddy Harstad has been a great help.”

Butler said she doesn’t plan to change many things in the program, noting the success of Bull and her predecessors.

Oak Harbor’s first meet is 3:15 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 13, at Marysville-Pilchuck High School. The Wildcats open at home at 5:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 19, with Monroe.
