An Oak Harbor man is facing a rape charge for impregnating a 14-year-old girl when he was 19 years old, according to Island County Superior Court documents.

Louis Scarpino, who is now 21, pleaded not guilty Dec. 22 to a single charge of rape of a child in the third degree. According to the charging document, Scarpino is accused of engaging in sexual intercourse with a minor who was at least 14 but less than 16 years old when he was at least four years older than her.

Oak Harbor Detective Ron Hofkamp investigated the case which began last summer when the Department of Social and Health Services reported that a 15-year-old girl was pregnant and due in August.

On Dec. 9, the girl’s mother gave the police the results of a paternity test that showed Scarpino was the biological father of the child, Hofkamp wrote.

The girl’s mother told the detective that Scarpino had admitted having sex with the underaged girl, but he felt it could not be his child since they only had sex once, the report states.

According to court documents, Scarpino made multiple outbursts during a court hearing Dec. 10. Judge Vickie Churchill set his bail at $5,000, but then raised it to $10,000 after he interrupted her. Additional security was called to the courtroom.

If convicted of the charge, Scarpino could face up to a year and eight months in prison under the standard sentencing range. Scarpino has a lengthy criminal history, Hofkamp wrote.
