A break from classes as Coupeville school year ends

One of the best ways for children to enjoy a warm, bright day is to spend it outside. That is exactly what students at Coupeville Elementary School did Wednesday.

They enjoyed the school’s annual end-of-year field day, which took place at Mickey Clark Field and provided a treat for the students.

“This is a great day for them,” second-grade teacher Kelly Pierce said. The part the kids especially look forward to is spraying the fire hose.

Firefighters from Central Whidbey Fire and Rescue brought a water tender and fire engine to the field. They unfurled hoses and students in each class competed at spraying a giant ball. Of course when the opportunity arose, teachers took the fire hose and coincidentally sprayed their students.

The students had their chance for revenge. Teachers and other volunteers manned a dunk tank while students took turns throwing balls.

The annual field day also means races, and plenty of them. Classes lined up for the traditional sack races and then there was the clothesline race, where students would race to one end, don a jersey hanging on a clothesline, and then race back to the starting line.

While Wednesday provided a break for the students, they still had to go to school.

The school year in Coupeville was supposed to wrap up Friday with a half day. Unfortunately from their perspective, students had to show up for a little while this week.

The winter snow storms forced the cancellation of three days of school earlier in the year, and only two snow make-up days were worked into the calendar.

So students attended half a day of classes Monday before the official beginning of summer vacation.
