A 50-year-old Oak Harbor man is accused of vandalizing his ex-girlfriend’s home and stealing items from her, court documents state.

Prosecutors charged Albert Thelen in Island County Superior Court July 29 with residential burglary, malicious mischief in the first degree and theft in the second degree. The burglary and malicious mischief charges are considered acts of domestic violence.

Thelen pleaded not guilty Aug. 10. If convicted of the charges, he could face more than five years in prison under the standard sentencing range. A criminal history increases the range.

Oak Harbor Police Officer Steve Nordstrand responded to the report of a burglary at a SE Midway Boulevard home July 26. The resident said she had come home to find that someone had destroyed a flat-screen TV, a laptop computer and a Nintendo DS. She suspected Thelen.

Nordstrand wrote that Thelen confessed to entering the woman’s home with a key and breaking the items. He also admitted to stealing 35 DVDs and an X-box 360 from the woman’s apartment, the officer wrote.

According to the report, Thelen was upset because he felt the woman owed him money.
