Just in time to pick up an appropriate gift for Mother’s Day, the WSU Island County Master Gardener’s Plant Sale will be held on Saturday, May 7, the day before Mother’s Day, at the Greenbank Farm at Highway 525 and Wonn Road from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

A variety of plants grown and tended to by Master Gardeners will be available to the public to plant and beautify home gardens, including perennials, trees, herbs, vegetables, berries, houseplants and shrubs. Colorful annuals and flower baskets are also being sold this year and would make great gifts for Mother’s Day.

At this plant sale, customers get the benefit of personal shoppers and Master Gardeners’ advice on choosing, planting, and maintaining plants. The sale also features a bake sale of homemade baked goods from Master Gardeners who can really cook.

Before or after shopping, customers can meander through the Master Gardener’s Education Garden to learn about pond, cottage, native, rain, shade, and rose gardens that have been established, maintained, and nurtured by WSU Master Gardeners of Island County. The Master Gardeners have added a new rhododendron garden this year, courtesy of Bill Sikes, a local hybridist.

This is a fundraising event for Island County Master Gardeners who volunteer through WSU Extension Services to educate the public about gardening, environmental stewardship, sustainability and horticulture free of charge, by participating in plant clinics, hotlines, educational gardens, seminars and other projects throughout Island County.

Because of county budget cuts, the Master Gardeners lost their coordinator this year.  This plant sale is vital to the organization’s fundraising efforts to ensure that the Master Gardeners can continue to serve the public by offering the free gardening advice and education that is the mission of Island County Master Gardeners.
