Bakers, candy makers and canners honored

Island County chairperson Judy Prochaska announced the winners of the first part of the Island County contest in the Candy, Baking, and Canning categories.

Island County chairperson Judy Prochaska announced the winners of the first part of the Island County contest in the Candy, Baking, and Canning categories.

The event was held March 6 at Deer Lagoon Grange and was open to all residents of Island County. The judges for this event were Mary Ann Davis and Pat Nostrand, both of Clinton.

There were over 30 entries made, 12 of the entries garnered blue ribbons and were judged as best in their class. Those entries will represent Island County at the Washington State Grange competition at the end of June in Bellingham.

The county level contest will have one more event in which Island County residents can compete and possibly qualify for the state level. The categories for the next event to be held May 8 at South Camano Grange are Needlework, Quilts, and Sewing. Group 2, Cakes and Cookies: Class E. Frosted layer cake, Coca Cola cake, by Roxie Chamuler, Freeland; Class G; Cake Mix Cake, Chocolate cherry cake by Judy Prochaska, Greenbank. Class H. Baked Cookies, Madelines, by Meena Prochaska, Freeland. Class I; Cookie mix cookies, peanut butter by Chuck Prochaska, Greenbank.

Group 4, Diabetic: Class M; Diabetic cookies, peanut butter cookie bites by Chuck Prochaska, Greenbank.

Canning: Class A; Fruits, Crabapples by Christine Williams, Langley. Class B; Vegetables, pickled peppers by Molly Kay, Clinton. Class C; Soft Spreads, Chutney with grape and pepper conserve by Molly Kay, Clinton. and Class D; Meat, Poultry or Seafood, Peacock by Christine Williams, Langley.
