Traffic safety effort appreciated

Thank you Sheriff Brown!

Getting to your intended destination two minutes later than you’d like won’t kill you, but speeding there could. Thank you to Sheriff Brown for taking notice of the growing problem of unsafe driving practices on Whidbey Island’s roads (News-Times, March 10).

I’m constantly harassed by aggressive drivers who either tailgate or even flash their headlights at me because they feel I should be driving faster than the limit posted. The 50 mph limit on most of Highway 20 is not there just to irritate drivers. The road not only has blind corners and hills, but also driveways and road entrances that seem to be located at dangerous places on the road.

These hazards are multiplied if you need to wait for oncoming traffic to pass before turning. But bad driving isn’t limited to the highway nor to just speed. Side streets in town, such as Pioneer Way and Bayshore Drive, seem to see their share of speeders. And of course let’s not forget the multi-task driver. With cell phones and cups of coffee (sometimes at the same time) drivers seem to be forgetting that they are behind the wheel of a deadly weapon.

So please, drive respectfully and responsibly for the safety of everyone else on the road. Adhere to the speed limit and leave the art of multi-tasking outside the car. Thanks again to Sheriff Brown and Deputy Campbell for recognizing this safety issue and acting upon it.
