Thanks: County cares about children

Thank you to Island County commissioners Mac McDowell, Bill Byrd and Mike Shelton for their support of the Children’s Commission in the 2007 budget for Island County.

The County commissioners have demonstrated their commitment to make certain that children and youth issues are seriously examined and addressed for our Island County community.

The formation of the Children’s Commission started through the Community Health Advisory Board (CHAB) and has been over a two year effort. This effort has had a group of dedicated volunteers seeing the need in our community for assessment, advocacy and action for our children and youth.

I have been a part of the Children’s Commission Work Group and would like to recognize the other members of this group: Chuck Scurlock, Karin Watson, Bess Windecker-Nelson, Patti Carroll, Dan Bond, and Dave Thomason. These individuals will be continuing their work on the formation of the Children’s Commission as it becomes a reality for Island County in 2007.

The concept of the Children’s Commission was supported by many organizations serving children and youth at the first “State of Island County Children and Youth” Forum last February. The forum was sponsored by the Family Support Alliance and many community partners. The 2007 forum will be held Feb. 23 at Service Alternatives in Coupeville from 12:30 to 4 p.m. Those wanting to attend can contact Karin Watson, Island County Health Department/Family Support Alliance, at 360-678-7940 or karin.W@co.island.wa.us.

Congratulations to Island County for their commitment to the children and youth in our community!
