Stay home, avoid disease

I know of at least one 5th grade Coupeville child who was vaccinated, but still contracted the illness. It would be interesting to know how many other vaccinated children also became ill.

For pertussis, younger children are at high risk for serious complications. However, the vaccine does not guarantee immunity.

So, the real lesson may be: Parents and all of us should remember the best way to stop the spread of illness is to stay home when we’re sick with fever, vomiting, diarrhea, colored discharge, productive cough. Wash hands frequently with regular old soap and water, especially after you’ve been out and about in the “sea of humanity.” Cough into your arm.

Hard to think of how to help those who truly can’t stay home to care for ill children though.
