The Oak Harbor Chamber of Commerce sent a survey to all its members about the proposed tax to support Island Transit. Only 21 percent of the chamber’s members responded. That’s 102 out of 480 members, of which 57 members were against the tax and 45 members were for it. That’s 11.9 percent against and 9.4 percent for, out of all the chamber’s members.

The vast majority, 88.7 percent, didn’t respond. We have no way of knowing if their surveys get lost in the mail, thrown away as junk mail or chewed up by the family dog. Or maybe they can’t make up their minds or simply

just don’t care.

Yet the chamber formally took a position against the tax because of “member feedback” (Whidbey News-Times, July 21).

A more straightforward position for the chamber to have taken is that most of its members either can’t make up their minds or just don’t care about the Island Transit tax issue, but it’s taking a position based on very limited feedback and the opinions of its directors.
