Safer vehicles, more funding

The impact of the ferries going down as happened recently and possibly again for travelers and tourists in the peak summer months, it could put a stranglehold on Whidbey Island’s economy.

The alternative route adds to the congested freeways even more. I recommend the state and counties look into a long-term solution by establishing a “vehicle safety inspection” requirement at state authorized check points.

A modest $25 to $30 penalty for not correcting deficiencies would boost funding to supplement the ferry system and our freeways. How often do we have to slam on our brakes behind a vehicle with no brake lights or see someone with no headlights in the pouring rain? Too many close calls on Highway 20 with vehicles held together with clothes hangers and J-weld, for example.

Stick it to the serious driving infractions and violators to put money into the resources we need to fix now or really pay for later!

Also consider adapting a vehicle emission testing system. Ever seen school kids getting off a bus coughing and choking in the fumes from the domestic vehicles waiting behind it burning oil? Washington takes a lot of pride in enviromental causes. Could this be a solution?
