The letter on I-1098 in the June 23 issue justifies a response. I-1098 assumes that introducing a state income tax will lead to the elimination of other taxes such as the B&O tax, etc. Unfortunately, this is not the way that the Legislature works in this state or any other state. It will simply be an additional tax.

Also it may start out as a tax on the wealthy but before you know it the income level would be steadily reduced and ultimately include us all. The Seattle Times is correct in saying that the lack of a state income tax is a very important factor in selecting a place to do business. It is a huge advantage over states which do have an income tax. It is certainly an important factor in deciding where to retire. If want to attract businesses and retirees to Washington we should vote against I-1098.
