Editor,

On Sunday, Feb. 28, my brother Ron and I drove from our home in Portland to your lovely island to attend a memorial for our sweet cousin, `Che Gilliland, as organized by the good people of your community.

For a time, I felt as though I was back in ’Nawlins as the affair there in Coupeville captured and embodied the community spirit  that the Crescent City is famous for.

The turn out was not only an impressive celebration of `Che’s life, but reflected her colorful, musical and socially connected life.

I am sure `Che’s family was not only grateful, but very impressed by the depth of caring, emotional baring and celebratory sharing that the people of your little corner of h eaven organized.

It was grand to see the smiles on the faces of the “non-involved” tourists as the memorial “jazz band” wound its way through the old town.

A parade that the “Preservation Hall Band” would have appreciated and admired, the showing of support and commitment to the memory of one sweet lady.

I can assure you all that the wonderful, pixie smile of `Che’s joined the blessings of sunlight as all these activities unfolded for the people who planned, produced and participated in this celebration of `Che’s time spent with all of us. Truly, these people reflected `Che’s spirit and intent toward her fellow humans.

As for myself, thanks to all the people of your island who showed such ease in sharing with the rest of us such openness and grace.
