In lieu of taxes, just ring and sing

I invite News-Times readers in Oak Harbor and Coupeville who enjoyed the Nov. 6 editorial, “Help your fellow man without taxes,” and the Nov. 6 letter, “Help your schools without taxes,” to drop by a conveniently located Salvation Army kettle sometime during the holiday shopping season and deposit what you feel your taxes don’t cover.

I invite service clubs and charities that would like to increase their fundraising to join me in the heart-warming experience of standing for a few hours in the cold ringing a bell or singing Christmas carols to collect the donations. In addition to returning the net proceeds to the Whidbey Island charities, the Salvation Army will also reward participating organizations with 10 percent of the gross collections. Please call 675-8315 or email ohredkettle@earthlink.net to get on the schedule.
