“I will never get over the sheer and utter coolness of living someplace where fighter jets perform maneuvers over your head on any given day. That roar is one of the most impressive sounds of freedom that I know.”

This is a quote from the Facebook page of a friend who doesn’t live on Whidbey Island. Instead, she lives near where the Navy and Air Force share airspace on a daily basis, Hampton, Va. and Norfolk, Va.

She posted, “When I visit my son and his family, who live on Langley Air Force Base, I see the excitement my young grandchildren exhibit watching these impressive planes soar above them. I wake up to the sounds of jet engines starting up.”

Whidbey Island has been my home for 20 years. I never really gave airplane noise much notice until it became such a volatile issue.

I love living on Whidbey Island. Jet noise is loud but, as the quote above states, that roar is one of the most impressive sounds of freedom that I know.
