Cribbage king makes us welcome

When we moved to Whidbey Island six years ago, we did not know a single person on the island. Prior to moving from San Diego we subscribed to the Whidbey News-Times for several months. Through your paper we learned of a cribbage tournament that was held annually at the Greenbank Farm. Being avid cribbage players, that was worthy of excitement and anticipation.

While attending my first tournament, I was invited to attend the cribbage club that meets Thursdays at the Pizza Factory in Oak Harbor. Through the tournaments and club, we have made wonderful, lasting friends.

Thus, the point of this letter is to thank Bruce Howard, the tournament sponsor and one of Whidbey Island’s unsung heroes. For at least seven years now, he has put on these tournaments for the enjoyment of any interested islanders, as well as some who travel from the mainland to attend. Bruce has since become president of the Eagles Club, where the tournaments, due to popular demand, are now held a number of times each year. He does a substantial amount of work and runs the tournaments carefully and professionally so that they are fun and entertaining for all. He receives no pay and little recognition other than the verbal thanks of attendees.

We want to take this opportunity to publicly express our appreciation for Bruce Howard, one of those giving, caring individuals who makes Whidbey Island such a terrific place to live.
