Shadowhawks’ commander relieved of duty

The commanding officer of Electronic Attack Squadron (VAQ) 141 has been relieved of duty by Commander, Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 8, while operating in the Gulf of Oman Tuesday, according to a release from the U.S. 5th Fleet Public Affairs Office.

Cmdr. Karl Pugh was relieved by Capt. Jeffery A. Davis following non-judicial punishment proceedings for an alcohol-related incident that occurred July 12 during a port visit to Manama, Bahrain.

VAQ-141 executive officer, Cmdr. Michael J. Miller, has assumed command of the squadron.

Naval Air Station Whidbey Island officials had no comment.

Pugh will be temporarily assigned to appropriate duties at NAS Whidbey, according to Lt. Frederick Martin, a media officer with Commander, U.S. Navy Central Command Public Affairs in Bahrain.

This is the second Whidbey Island squadron commander to be relieved of duty this year. Cmdr. Timothy Murphy, former commander of VAQ-129, was relieved of duty April 11, following a citation by Anacortes police for driving under the influence.

Pugh graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1992.

VAQ-141, deployed with CVW-8, is the first Growler squadron deployed on a carrier.

The Shadowhawks are embarked on board USS George H.W. Bush (CVN 77), conducting support operations for Enduring Freedom and New Dawn, as well as maritime security operations in the U.S. 5th Fleet area of responsibility
