    Car crashes, community mourns loss

    A 20-year-old North Whidbey man was killed in a one-car accident on E. Fakkema Road early Saturday morning. It was the first fatal car accident in Island County this year.
    Cameron Groberg was about a mile away from his home at about 4 a.m. when his car collided with a phone pole, sheering it in half.

    Man’s face stomped in Skate Park dispute

    A 22-year-old Oak Harbor man who stomped on another man’s head at the city’s Skate Park is facing a felony charge, according to court documents.
    Prosecutors charged Ryan Hickey in Island County Superior Court July 27 with second-degree assault. If convicted of the charge, he could face from three to nine months in jail.

    A 33-year-old Oak Harbor woman is accused of stealing more than $3,500 worth of pull tabs while she worked as a bartender at Henderson’s Restaurant two years ago, court documents state.
    Prosecutors charged Kathryn Barrett in Island County Superior Court June 29 with first-degree theft. She couldn’t make it to her arraignment scheduled for July 27 because she was in another state.

    A 52-year-old South Whidbey man is accused of raping a young woman after she passed out at a birthday party June 27 in Clinton.
    Prosecutors charged Keith Pankau in Island County Superior Court July 6 with rape in the second degree. He pleaded not guilty July 20.

    The state Liquor Control Board issued a 10-day liquor license suspension to the Element nightclub in Oak Harbor for allowing a minor into the cocktail lounge.
    The popular club on Bayshore Drive is closed for 10 days, from Aug. 3 to 13.

    It may be the dog days of summer, but some canines in Oak Harbor haven’t been taking it easy in the heat.
    Oak Harbor Police Chief Rick Wallace said officers dealt with three dog-bite incidents over the weekend. Oak Harbor Animal Control Officer Terry Sampson has the job of investigating the cases this week. He doesn’t blame the weather or the alignment of the planets for the uptick in dog attacks.

    The owners of Oak Harbor businesses don’t have to fear a boycott for speaking their minds about a proposed tax increase.
    The director of the Oak Harbor Chamber of Commerce sent out an email to chamber members Wednesday warning that employees of Island Transit and members of the “Save Our System” campaign had threatened to boycott businesses that didn’t support the transit proposal on the ballot.

    An 18-year-old Oak Harbor man is accused of raping a girl who had passed out at a birthday party July 5, court documents state.
    Prosecutors charged Andrew Rodriguez in Island County Superior Court with second-degree rape, or in the alternative, indecent liberties. An alternative charge allows a jury a choice of verdicts if the case goes to trial.
