    A 23-year-old Oak Harbor woman has been charged with a felony in connection with an unusual one-car, rollover accident on North Whidbey last November, court documents state.

    A 50-year-old Oak Harbor man is accused of vandalizing his ex-girlfriend’s home and stealing items from her, court documents state.
    Prosecutors charged Albert Thelen in Island County Superior Court July 29 with residential burglary, malicious mischief in the first degree and theft in the second degree. The burglary and malicious mischief charges are considered acts of domestic violence.

    Transit wins, Vance loses in Island County primary

    sland County voters likely approved a measure to boost funding for Island Transit by increasing sales tax.
    The ballot measure was passing by a healthy margin after the Island County Auditor’s Office released the first count of Tuesday’s primary election. A total of 12,465 ballots were cast in favor while 10,332 were in opposition. That’s 55 percent to 45 percent.
    Island Transit Director Martha Rose was thrilled.

    Charge dropped in raped-while-unconscious case

    Prosecutors dropped a charge against an 18-year-old Oak Harbor man accused of raping an unconscious girl during a July 15 party, according to the defense attorney.
    Prosecutors had charged Andrew Rodriguez in Island County Superior Court with second-degree rape, or in the alternative, indecent liberties.

    A 35-year-old Oak Harbor man was recently sentenced to jail and electronic home detention for assaulting and threatening to kill a woman, court documents state.
    Lionel Peoples, Jr., pleaded guilty in Island County Superior Court Aug. 10 to harassment (threats to kill) and fourth-degree assault.

    A boat carrying a suicidal man and his dead girlfriend was first located off of Whidbey’s Fort Ebey State Park Wednesday morning.
    Island County Sheriff Mark Brown said his department took part in the search for the 36-foot boat, which the Coast Guard ultimately found near Orcas Island. Investigators suspect that 39-year-old Albert Beutler of Bellevue killed his girlfriend, 39-year-old Rhan Rha of Sammamish, and then himself.

    Disputed speed limit cut likely on West Beach...

    A section of West Beach Road on North Whidbey may undergo a couple of safety-related changes.
    Residents of West Beach, mainly those north of Fort Nugent Road, have been lobbying Island County officials for years to lower the speed limit on a stretch of the road. Officials have resisted the effort, until now.

    Four people were injured early Monday morning in a roll-over accident at the intersection of Arnold and Monroe Landing roads.
    Deputy Lane Campbell with the Island County Sheriff’s Office said 23-year-old Gary Hibbard of Oak Harbor was driving his Honda Accord eastward on Arnold Road at a high rate of speed. He lost control as he drove through the intersection.
