Letter: Forward-thinking people can plan for city’s future

Editor,

In response to Oct. 19 letter: With all due respect Mr. Hulett, you have no clue what the hell is going on.

Shame on you for thrashing my reputation as being a leader in this business community for over 30 years. Evidently, you haven’t taken the time to do your research about the candidates and what they stand for. Please go to my website www.jeffmackforcitycouncil.com You will find all I’m trying to do is get our community on track for the future.

I’ve sat back and watched many administrations go by, with little or no growth and lack of leadership.

So I ask you, what solutions and visions have you brought forth for our city and our residents? I could be wrong, but I don’t think that you have any experience with owning and running a small business. I’ve been in the jewelry business for over 50 years. Every day I’m responsible for employee payrolls, property management, keeping cases full of costly inventory, being responsible for customers’ property and care and all while providing outstanding customer service.

Although Mr. Thompson has funded my campaign (he is a resident in the city limits), if you look on the PDC, you will find that he’s just one of many business owners and honest, concerned residents who have contributed to my campaign. Which leads to the real question… who is funding Ms. Hizon and Mr. Busig for their campaign since it’s not reported?

At least I’m being honest and transparent about where and who I am getting my donations from and reporting them all.

It appears you can’t seem to get your head around the fact that Oak Harbor is dying. As you put it, I do believe we need to “build, build, build,” but you have like, so many others, missed a major word: managed.

Our city needs to take care of the Navy and others who work in our area by building affordable housing for all. The government does not build homes anymore; it’s done within the private sector by capital investors.

With managed growth, we can attract new amenities which in turn bring new job opportunities. It’s private capital investment that can put much needed funds back into the city. It’s going to take people like myself that have the ability to think forward and have real quality business sense and leadership skills to help facilitate some type of plan for the future.
