Letter: Need longer sentences to protect society from evil

Editor,

In regard to the article “Lawyers argue over incest at sentencing” in the Dec. 15 edition of the Whidbey News-Times, I don’t know what I find more disturbing: the fact that lawyer Steve McKay, or any human being for that matter, could actually argue that incest laws are archaic, compare it to consensual sex and ask, “What evil is it we are trying to protect society from?”

Or the fact that the perpetrator of this heinous incestuous act only received 14 months in prison, which apparently is the standard sentence for such a thing.

This kind of archaic thinking and length of sentencing is exactly the type of evil we do need to protect society from.
