We’re fortunate this year to have clear choices for state legislators, 10th District. Those of us hoping for common sense, values-driven policies will want to vote for Scott McMullen and Dave Paul. Both of these Democratic candidates are family men who value education, public health and safety, good paying jobs, and maintenance of infrastructure. They will represent us well in Olympia.

Unfortunately, Republican incumbents are out of step with 10th District voters. For example, in 2018, the Legislature passed a bill to ban bump stocks. This is sensible gun legislation, supported across the country and across political parties — a no-brainer. Unfortunately, Mr. Hayes voted “no” and Ms. Smith was listed as “excused.”

Another example of being out of step: SB 5722, a bill to ban conversion therapy for LGBTQ minors under 18. Under this law, health providers can lose their license if they try to influence a minor’s sexuality or gender identity. The American Medical Association, American Psychological Association and American Academy of Pediatrics all consider conversion therapy to be ineffective and harmful. The bill passed with a commanding majority across party lines, but incumbents Smith and Hayes voted “no.”

We’re represented in Olympia by pleasant legislators who have very conservative voting records. The above bills are but a few examples. Do the incumbents really represent us? I think not.

I plan to vote for Scott McMullen and Dave Paul.
