Unable to overcome a slow start, the Coupeville High School football team lost 33-27 to Chimacum Friday, Oct. 27, at Mickey Clark Field.
The Wolves (1-5, 3-6) complete their season at 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 4, with a trip to league-leading and fourth-ranked Cascade Christian (5-0, 7-1) at Sumner’s Sunset Stadium.
Chimacum zipped to an 18-0 lead Friday and Coupeville couldn’t quite catch the Cowboys.
Chimacum scored twice in the first quarter and added a third score early in the second period.
At that point, the Coupeville offense finally caught fire thanks to a spark provided by Cameron Toomey-Stout. After the Cowboys third TD, Toomey-Stout returned the ensuing kickoff 85 yards and a touchdown. Hunter Downes booted the extra point.
Next came the first of three TD tosses by Downes. The trio of scores raised Downes’ career mark to 34, a new Coupeville school record, previously held by his current offensive co-ordinator Brad Sherman.
The first scoring pass went 18 yards to Toomey-Stout, cutting the Cowboys’ lead to 18-14.
Chimacum answered with a 60-yard TD bolt by Mathew Bainbridge, making it 25-14.
Downes went to work again, capping a long drive with a scoring strike to Teo Keilwitz that made it 25-21 at halftime.
The second half started much like the first for the Coupeville offense, and the Wolves failed to find pay dirt in three possessions. Meanwhile, Chimacum tacked on a TD to go up 33-21.
Coupeville scored late on a Downes to Jake Hoagland pass set up by a fumble-causing tackle by Kyle Rockwell.
The Wolves, however, would never get the ball back as Chimacum converted a big third-down play to run out the clock.
Coupeville played the game without four two-way starters, all from skill positions.
Coupeville celebrated Senior Night during its final home game of the season, honoring Downes, Hoagland, Toomey-Stout, Rockwell, Julian Wells, James Vidoni, Tyler McCalmont and Hunter Smith.
