Hot time at Summer Sizzler

When Oak Harbor head boys basketball coach Mike Washington planned his Summer Sizzler basketball camp in early spring, he had no idea the temperatures would be hovering in the low 90s, turning the three-day event July 9 to 11 into a true “sizzler.”

Although the turnout for the camp was small, the campers were enthusiastic and working hard in the Oak Harbor gym despite the Wednesday afternoon heat.

“This is my first actual camp since taking over the high school program,” Washington said. “I’m looking at doing another one at Christmas time and hopefully having a better turnout.”

Washington’s camp assistants were several of his varsity players and he said this in itself was a great benefit.

“It’s good having the kids out here working with the high school guys,” he said. “We are showing them the fundamental stuff we do at the high school and the kids like that.”

Thirteen-year-old Josh Ebert, a student at Oak Harbor Middle School, was one of the kids working hard on his shooting skills during drills.

“I’m having fun and learning a lot, too,” he said.

“The kids have learned a lot, a whole lot at this camp and all of them are getting better,” Washington said. “You can see how much they’ve improved by the way we’re doing drills today. When we introduced the drills to them on Monday the kids looked at me and it was like, ‘What?’”

On the high school level, Wash-

ington said the Oak Harbor varsity and junior varsity teams have been doing well playing in the summer leagues.

“It’s been a good summer
