Whidbey General Hospital is pleased to announce its Diabetes Self Management Training (DSMT) classes have been certified by the American Diabetes Association. With Diabetes Mellitus Type 2 being on the rise in adults and children it is important to get the proper education to be able to manage this disease properly. The classes are designed to empower those with diabetes, to take control and be a part of the day to day management of the disease.
There are four, two-hour classes in all. Class 1 is an individual meeting with a registered nurse/certified diabetic educator to introduce the basic skills needed for diabetes management (glucometer teaching and testing, basic carbohydrate counting, understanding what diabetes is and how to treat it).
Class 2 is a group class with the registered dietitian/certified diabetic educator to further discuss the effect of foods on glycemic control. In depth carbohydrate counting, label reading and meal planning is discussed.
Class 3 is a group class taught by a registered nurse to discuss complications of diabetes and how to decrease your risk of progression to complications as well as how to treat certain problems like hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) and sick day management.
Class 4 is a group class taught by a registered nurse and exercise physiologist on how to incorporate exercise into your management plan as well as the effect of exercise on blood sugar control.
There are additional classes for those needing insulin instruction or adjustment.
To register for classes you must obtain an order from your physician. These classes are covered by Medicare and most insurances. For more information, call Line Goulet, RN, CDE, 678-7656 extension 2650 or Erin Simms, RD, CD, CDE, at extension 3202.
