King crowned twice at state

Coupeville distance runner Kyle King left his competitors in the dust of Mount Tahoma High School stadium Friday and Saturday at the boys Class 1A track and field championships, winning the gold medal 1,600 and 3,200-meter events.

The Cascade League and district champion capped off a stellar junior year of competition by showing runners from around the state that when it comes to distance running, the speed is on Whidbey Island.

In Friday’s running of the 1,600, King had a time of 4:21.51 to beat second-place finisher Jasen Brown from Brewster who crossed the finish line at 4:22.52.

Coming back on Saturday, King posted a time of 9:42.04 in the 3,200 to blow away the competition.

Tim Welch from Lakeside finished more than three seconds behind in second place with a clocking of 9:45.29.

King scored all of Coupeville’s 20 points earning the Wolves a tie with Freeman for 13th place.

Also competing for Coupeville at the state meet were junior Brian Miller in the javelin and senior Chelsea Rosenkrance in the girls 300-meter hurdles.

King’s High School was the winner of the boys half of the meet with 87.50 points. Newport was a distant second with 48 and Bellevue Christian placed third with 47 points.

Lakeside won the girls half of the meet scoring 73.50 points, with Charles Wright High School second at 71 and King’s High School third with 59.
