Spring sport seasons in the WesCo North and Cascade Conferences are in full swing and it’s a difficult proposition, especially in baseball, to really determine how good or bad a team is — due to the way the schedules are set up.
In the Cascade Conference, teams play the same league opponent on Monday, Wednesday and Friday and if a ball club runs up against two of the top teams in the league on consecutive weeks, you can have an 0-6 record in a hurry!
The same thing is true in the WesCo North, with league opponents squaring off on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Right now Coupeville has a 5-6 record, but six of those games have been against league leading Archbishop Murphy with an 8-2 overall record and Cedarcrest that is 7-2.
The Wolf Pack lost three straight to Archbishop Murphy, but defeated Cedarcrest 4-3 in eight innings in a big victory in the rain on March 26.
Coupeville also won two of three games from Granite Falls, so folks better think before writing 2008 off as another bad season for the red, black and white.
The Oak Harbor High School baseball team is on a roll right now and is in the thick of the WesCo North race.
The Wildcats are currently in third place behind Monroe and Snohomish, the No. 2-ranked Class 4A team in the state, who are both undefeated in league games at 7-0.
Soccer standings in both leagues make things appear to be a case of the “haves and have nots,” but nothing is further from the truth.
Oak Harbor is 1-6 in league games, but five of those losses have been by two goals or less. With a little luck, the ’Cats could just as easily be 6-1, instead of the other way around.
Cascade leads the pack with a 7-1 record, followed by Snohomish at 6-1-1.
The same is true for the bunch that calls Mickey Clark Field home. Coupeville is 1-6 in the Cascade Conference, but lost one game in a shootout and three others by scores of 2-1, 2-0 and 2-1.
Cedarcrest is undefeated in the conference at 6-0, and Lakewood is second at 5-1. After that it’s a dogfight and only two other teams have winning records.
Softball teams at both schools are having their troubles but as hard as the players and coaches work every day, I have no doubt things will get straightened out before the final strike of the 2008 season is called.
Coupeville is in the basement of the league and is still seeking its first win of the season, but here’s a tidbit of information.
Cedarcrest leads the league at 7-0 but after that, no team has a winning record!
In the WesCo North the Wildcats are 1-4 but have no fear, the weather is beginning to warm up and Oak Harbor’s bats are soon to follow.
Everett is the league leader in the WesCo North at 5-1, and the always tough Monroe Bearcats are second at 4-1.
The Oak Harbor tennis team has a number of inexperienced, young players on the roster and a 1-5 record indicates just that.
Snohomish and Stanwood are undefeated at 5-0 and tied for first place in the WesCo North.
At Coupeville all you can say about the tennis team is, “Oh, my!”
The Wolf Pack has struggled for the past two seasons, but are flying high in 2008 and pounding the likes of Friday Harbor and Darrington in league matches.
The Oak Harbor golf teams have also been on fire lately.
Led by veteran linksters Eric McCardle and Phil Reedy, who are joined this season by varsity newcomers Judd Ford and Brandon Kenworthy, the Wildcats tee off one “fearsome foursome.”
Andrea Sutter and Brittnney Loveng, who both qualified for the state tournament last year, are right on track in 2008 and have been shooting tremendous rounds of golf in recent weeks.
The high school spring sports season is not quite half over and to those athletes who are doing well, keep on truckin’, baby! And for those who may be struggling a bit, I say, “Don’t give up, don’t ever give up. Keep pushing and success will come your way.”
