It takes a forward thinking superintendent and board of education to recognize the need to provide alternative learning environments. As the grandparent of students attending the Cedar program, I am, daily, grateful for the opportunity afforded my grandchildren. They learn about nature by experiencing it on nature trails that teach beauty as well as plant knowledge and care of the environment.
They experience math and nutrition by learning how to shop and cook. They learn how to spell in classrooms of eight to 10. Their learning process is individual, maximizing their opportunity to grow intellectually, mature at a rate guided by respect for others and concern for the community. As the adult who made the decision to enroll the children in Cedar, I find myself supported and guided by other families and the staff. My efforts to meet the learning needs of my grandchildren are reviewed by wonderful role models and mentors like Mendy McLean-Stone.
David Pfeiffer is a talented leader and administrator. He works on the possible and makes so much possible for the children. The staff and families create an environment that is fully education and child oriented. As a taxpayer, I realize that the bulk of my tax money remains with the district supporting the traditional school setting. It is money well spent, as is the opportunity provided to my grandchildren. Thank you for your commitment to the education to all our students. I am happy to be able to provide three more “full-time equivalents” to the budget.
