Fall pre-season practice sessions are over and it’s time for high school football teams in the area to get down to business.
Friday night, Oak Harbor travels to Everett to square off against Cascade in a non-league game, and the Wildcats are looking for a little payback.
In last season’s opening game, the Bruins handed Oak Harbor a 15-10 loss that was the first time the purple and gold had been defeated on the turf at Wildcat Memorial Stadium.
This year’s season opener is going to be different.
In 2008, new head coach Jay Turner had a young and inexperienced team but this time around, 30 senior Wildcats will be among the players suiting up for the game and every one of them remembers what happened in 2008.
“Right now, we don’t know a whole lot about Cascade,” Turner said. “We do know they are an athletic team with pretty good running back.”
The Bruins like to run their offense with a split end and a wingback who will go in motion at times. They also like to employ a split end and a slot back who will try to run the defensive backs off the line then pass the ball to one of the halfbacks in the flat underneath the pass coverage.
Oak Harbor defenders have been working hard on these formations, as crossing patterns can be confusing at times.
In last Saturday’s purple and gold scrimmage, new Wildcat signal caller Clarence LaMont looked sharp running the offense and senior halfback Donovan Hunt ran the ball well.
Up front, the line blocked extremely well and they should be ready to go against the Bruins.
Kickoff against Cascade is set for 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 4, at Everett Memorial Stadium.
