Two hits, six errors and nine strikeouts resulted in an 8-0 Stanwood victory over the Oak Harbor High School softball team in a Tuesday WesCo North game.

Kayla Ratliff pitched did a good job on the mound for the Wildcats giving up only two earned runs while striking out four and surrendering eight hits, but defensive miscues in the infield and outfield really hurt.

“They scored three runs on us in the top of the second inning, but none of their players should have reached base,” coach Jessica Weikle said. “We made error after error and that just killed us.”

League-leading Stanwood, 4-0 league, 7-0 overall, added a single run in the top of the third inning and blew the game open with three more runs in the top of the fifth inning on three straight hits and a throwing error.

One bright spot for the Wildcats was the play of shortstop Kaylee Meders.

“Kaylee had an exceptional game,” Weikle said. “She played error-free ball at shortstop, making eight put outs and an assist.”

Stanwood pitcher Corinne Stillman had good control on the mound, striking out nine Oak Harbor batters and giving up just a pair of hits, handing Oak Harbor its fourth straight WesCo North loss. The Wildcats are 3-4 overall.

Lauren Miller had a single for the Wildcats with one out in the second inning, but Stillman set down 14 consecutive batters before Ratliff singled to lead off the the bottom of the seventh.

“We just have to start getting more aggressive at the plate and stop making so many errors,” Weikle said.

Oak Harbor’s next home game at the Hillcrest Elementary School field is at 4 p.m. Tuesday, April 14, against Everett.
