Oak Harbor’s Derek Thomas will play for the Wesco North singles championship today, Friday, Oct. 23, in Stanwood.
Thomas was the only Wildcat entry to win yesterday. No. 8 seed singles player Josh Evans and the No. 8 seed doubles team of Ben Cardinal and Max O’Dell were eliminated.
Thomas, the No. 2 seed, will play top-seeded Trevor Amsberry of Monroe. Amsberry defeated Thomas 6-4, 5-7, 6-3 when the two met during the regular season Sept. 28.
Win or lose, both Thomas and Amsberry will advance to the district tournament beginning next Wednesday in Stanwood. The winner will have the No. 1 seed.
Thomas reached the finals by defeating Dominik Schrock of Snohomish 6-0, 6-0 in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, Thomas stopped Howard Chen of Monroe 6-1, 6-2.
Evans lost to Amsberry in the quarterfinals 6-0, 6-2, then fell to Corey Coombs of Marysville-Pilchuck in the consolation round.
Cardinal and O’Dell dropped a 6-0, 6-3 match to Jared and Chase Anderson of Snohomish in the quarterfinals. The pair then fell 6-4, 6-3 in the consolation round to Marty Thordarson and Austin Taylor of Arlington.
