The shorthanded Oak Harbor High School boys basketball team couldn’t quite pull out its game Tuesday, Feb. 3, at Marysville Getchell, falling 50-43 to the Chargers.

The Wildcats struggled through a poor shooting night, particularly in the second half when they sank only 27 percent of their shots.

Getchell (1-7, 4-14) took advantage to pick up its first Wesco win of the season.

The cold-shooting ‘Cats could have used Dyllan Harris, who is out with a hand injury. Harris leads the Wesco 3A North with a 20-points-per-game scoring average.

The game was close throughout with multiple lead changes. The Chargers spurted at the end of each quarter, taking leads of 14-12, 27-22 and 34-32 at the period breaks.

Marysville Getchell went on a 5-0 run midway through the fourth period to get a little breathing room.

Preston Rankin hit a couple of big fourth-quarter hoops for the Wildcats, but the Chargers were able to hold off the final Wildcat push.

“We got the looks we wanted that could have won us the game, they just didn’t drop,” coach John Weston said. “We had a lot of missed opportunities from close that normally drop for us.

“Zach Jones played some big minutes despite being pretty sick. Anthony Powell was huge for us defensively. Sean Erskine and Savion Passmore also gave us some big minutes and played with a lot of tenacity.”

Sean Erskine scored 12 points to pace the Wildcat attack.

Ben Fikse added seven, Jones six, Diangelo McKinney five, Rankin four, Hollins-Passmore four, Powell three and Jake Sturdevant two.

Oak Harbor (2-6, 3-15) entertains second-place Marysville-Pilchuck (7-1, 14-4) at 7:15 p.m. Friday, Feb. 6.
