This year, the best tumbling team in the state of Washington is right here in Oak Harbor.
On Saturday, May 17, the seven members of the Moving and Grooving Island Flyers tumbling team won the team championship in power tumbling at the Washington State Trampoline and Tumbling meet in Issquah.
More than 150 young athletes on nine teams from around the state competed at the meet.
In addition to winning the team tumbling trophy, the Island Flyers brought home the second place trophy in the trampoline event and placed third in the double mini event.
The Island Flyers also won eight individual state titles.
Amelia Berner, age 11, won gold medals for first-place finishes in Level 4 trampoline and Level 5 tumbling.
Nine-year-old Lauren Aspery brought home gold medals in Level 4 trampoline and Level 4 tumbling, and Colby Russell, age 8, was the winner in Level 3 trampoline.
Hannah Barnes, age seven, was a double gold medal winner in Level 3 trampoline and Level 4 tumbling, and 12-year-old Darian Hill completed the Flyers’ first-place finishers being crowned champion in Level 8 tumbling.
The team is coached by Pam Lovett and Wendy Richardson, and all seven members of the team will compete in the regionals May 31 in Seattle where more than 300 athletes from five states are expected to be present.
