Hu, Schell qualify for state
The first high school swim meet of the season Tuesday afternoon was big one for the Oak Harbor boys team.
Not only did the Wildcats handily trounce Lynden 128-41, but senior John Hu and sophomore Tyler Schell qualified for the Class 4A state championship meet thanks to their times in the 200 individual medley and the 500 freestyle.
In the 200 individual medley Hu, the defending state champion in the event, swam a time of 1:59.15.
Not to be out done, Schell recorded a time of 4:59.86 in the grueling 500 freestyle.

’Cats thump Hawks 60-24
The Oak Harbor High School girls basketball team opened the season in impressive fashion Wednesday evening, crushing Mountlake Terrace 60-24 in a non-league game.
Junior Jessica Denmon shot the lights out for the Wildcats, hitting for a game-high 24 points.
Oak Harbor opened a 19-7 lead after the first eight minutes of action, but cooled off in the second period scoring just four points.
Coach Brett McLeod’s team got things revved up in the third quarter putting an additional 21 points on the board and tallied 16 more in the fourth period to seal the victory.
Oak Harbor’s stingy defense held Mountlake Terrace to a mere eight points in the second half.
Jennifer Jansen was the second player in double figures for the Wildcats with 11 points and teammate Cori Henricksen had 10.
Corrine Pingul led Mountlake Terrace with 10 points.
