Help shelter our people

Greetings fellow Islanders. I am writing about the lovely family who has been hit hard by foreclosure and economic challenges. I have been there personally a few years ago and it is incredibly devastating.

Greetings fellow Islanders. I am writing about the lovely family who has been hit hard by foreclosure and economic challenges. I have been there personally a few years ago and it is incredibly devastating.

As I got back on my feet, I developed and funded a home on South Whidbey to assist others who had become homeless. I took in almost anyone who was in need, due to job loss, downsizing, divorce, addictions, mental health issues and more. We as a community do well in providing assistance in the form of food by Good Cheer and other food banks. This is much needed and helps many struggling adults, and children, too. I thank them all. Churches help also and provide spiritual support which also helps in a great way. Certain individuals also are very supportive and give generously.

What is not provided is temporary or long term shelter for those in need, this includes the middle class ad those who never felt they would lose their homes. My New Beginnings Northwest truly was well received by those who stayed for just a day to a few months. It was amazing, and I learned how incredible it was to give and to support others, who were lost, hurt and in need of a hand up, not a hand out. I cannot explain well enough how blessed I was by offering my time and money to others. I had to close after one year of service, my money ran out and no one understood or gave donations so that I could remain open. It was sad.

The time is now for others, personally, businesses, Realtors and banks, to form a way to provide for our community in need. Take time to think about how you would feel without shelter and comfort. Please, as a community, we should work as a team to have shelters. I would offer my time and experience for no cost with vacant homes and a big need. Please donate, you won’t be disappointed. This is Island County’s opportunity to shine in down times. Please contact me at matt1@yahoo.com or 678-6666.
