Bail revoked for man over shotgun incident

An Oak Harbor man allegedly fired a shotgun during an argument, according to court documents.

An Oak Harbor man is being held in jail without bail after he allegedly fired a shotgun during an argument Dec. 10, according to court documents.

Samuel D. Howard, 56, was awaiting trial on a felony protection order violation when he was arrested for the incident at the Auld Holland trailer park.

The alleged victim reported that he was standing by his car when Howard accused him of taking his money and then shot the gun “towards” him, the police report states.

A witness who lives in the trailer park told police that Howard shot twice. She said she was upset because Howard shot in the direction of her trailer, the report states.

Police searched the unit where Howard had been living and found a 12-gauge Maverick shotgun under a mattress.

Howard, however, said it was the other man who had fired a shotgun at him, the officer wrote.

Howard pleaded not guilty in Island County Superior Court Dec. 20 to assault in the second degree with a deadly weapon and unlawful possession of a firearm in the second degree.

Howard was charged with felony violation of a court order on Sept. 30. In that case, the judge ordered him released from custody with the condition that he commit no violations of criminal law. After he was arrested and charged in the shotgun case, the prosecution asked that his bail be revoked and the judge agreed.
