Pick your own sunflowers at North Whidbey farm

Walking up to stalks that were at least twice her height, 3-year-old Delilah Hunziker stretched up to point at a butter-yellow sunflower for her grandmother to cut at K & R Farms on North Whidbey.

The Dugualla Bay farm stand is now offering u-pick sunflowers from its fields off Highway 20 north of Oak Harbor. Assistant Manager Annalyse Sheridan said it was the first year the farm has grown the towering figures.

“We just decided to do something different this year,” Sheridan said, adding that they have already been quite popular.

It is the beginning of the season, and there are a variety of hues to choose from.

Hunziker and her grandmother, Heather Tawney, meandered past petals of burgundy, gold, butter and plenty of shades in between.

Some are even striped with multiple colors. Navy jets roared overhead intermittently, and several fellow visitors stopped to take a look skyward.

Those interested in taking home a bunch should first go inside the farm stand to pay $5 for entrance to the fields and to take home four blooms, Sheridan said.

Staff will give pickers a pair of clippers, and then they are free to roam about the flowers.

Kids aged 10 years old and younger can pick for free. The farm stand is open every day from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
