Wolves drop district play-in game / Boys basketball

Granite Falls ended the Coupeville High School boys basketball team’s season by defeating the host Wolves 52-38 in a district tournament play-in game Saturday, Feb. 2.

The Tigers also beat Coupeville a night earlier to earn a tie for fifth place in the North Sound Conference.

The Wolves (1-9, 2-17) couldn’t get shots to drop and fell behind early. Granite Falls (1-9, 4-17) built leads of 13-2 and 23-9 in the first two quarters.

Coupeville rallied in the third period. Ulrik Wells scored 5 points and Jered Brown and Hawthorne Wolfe each hit three-point shots as the Wolves pulled to within 4, 28-24, going into the final frame.

The Tigers’ Kellen Webb scored all 12 of his points in the fourth period to hold off the charging Wolves, who received 8 points from Sean Toomey-Stout and 4 from Jakobi Pilgrim in the quarter.

Toomey-Stout finished with 14 points, Brown 7, Wells 5, Pilgrim 4, Mason Grove 3, Wolfe 3 and Gavin Knoblich 2.

“Very proud of these boys,” Coupeville coach Brad Sherman said. “They showed a lot of heart tonight, and all year.

“Now we turn our eyes to this off-season and coming back stronger, and I think it’s a bright future ahead.”
