Wolves tame Tigers for 1st NSC win / Boys basketball

Strong at the beginning and end, the Coupeville High School boys basketball team won for the first time in North Sound Conference play, defeating visiting Granite Falls 52-43 Tuesday, Jan. 8.

The Wolves jumped to a big lead, then the Tigers clawed their way back into the contest. Unfazed by seeing its advantage erased, Coupeville pulled away in the final minutes to secure its first win in three tries in the new league.

The Wolves (1-2, 2-8) will aim for another conference victory when they travel to Sultan (2-1, 2-8) for a 7:30 p.m. game Friday, Jan. 11.

The Turks beat the Wolves 65-47 Dec. 11 in the conference opener.

Coupeville 52, Granite Falls 43

Sean Toomey-Stout scored 8 points and Gavin Knoblich 7 as the Wolves raced to a 20-4 lead in the first seven minutes. It would take more than two more quarters for Coupeville to double its points total.

The Wolves led 20-7 at the end of the opening period and 28-20 at halftime.

Granite Falls fought all the way back, tying the game at 36 with the final hoop of the third period.

Knoblich scored off a nice pass from Hawthorne Wolfe to start the fourth quarter, and the Wolves never relinquished the lead.

Mason Grove helped Coupeville cement the win by drilling a pair of three-pointers and sinking three free throws in the final period.

Grove finished the game with 15 points and four three-pointers to pace the Coupeville attack. Toomey-Stout had 11, Knoblich 9, Wolfe 8, Ulrik Wells 5 and Jacobi Pilgrim 4.

Joe Waud led the Tigers with 13.
