Lauren Crossley and Cierra LeGendre from Oak Harbor’s Sabertooth Shooting Squad garnered a variety of awards in the Washington State Smallboare Junior Outdoor Championships in Wenatchee over Mother’s Day weekend.
The match included more than 60 juniors, some from college programs.
The tournament was preceded by a indoor “fun” match Friday evening, and Crossley claimed first in the “A” class and 11th overall. LeGendre was first in the “B” class and 13th overall.
Classifications are determined by a shooter’s scores and the number of tournaments he or she attends. The classes range from D to A and up to junior expert and master.
Saturday and Sunday’s outdoor tournament featured a three-position (standing, kneeling and prone) match and a buddy match.
Crossley was first in the three-position event in the “A” class and eighth overall. She added a fourth in the prone match and 10th overall.
LeGendre, shooting for the first time in a smallbore outdoor event, was second in “B” class prone and 27th overall. She was also second in the “B” three-position event and 28th overall.
In the buddy match, the Oak Harbor pair took second.
Combined, they returned home with nine medals.
Crossley also competed the Paul Bunyan Sportsman’s Association tournament April 28 in Puyallup.
She took first in the class “A” three-position (offhand, kneeling and prone) tournament, third in the 60-shot prone tournament and sixth overall out of 20 in the junior smallbore .22, 50-meter event.
This was her first.22 caliber outdoor tournament since September and her second ever.
“She only got beat out by a few upper-class men that had been shooting for a number of years,” her father Troy Crossley said. “She has predominantly been shooting indoor air rifle and indoor smallbore lately at 50 feet.
“Some range officers and coaches were wowed by what she accomplished with no outdoor practice ahead of time. Some even gave her a new nickname of ‘The Janitor’ because she has been sweeping up a ton of medals lately.”
