With its offense in high gear, the Coupeville High School softball team swept a non-league doubleheader at Blaine Monday, April 2.

The Wolves won the opener 12-1 in six innings and the second game 20-6 to keep the Borderites winless in nine games this spring.

Coupeville, now 5-1 this season, plays another Northwest Conference school at 4 p.m. Friday, April 6, when Meridian (2-5) visits.

While the Wolves were scoring in every inning, pitcher Katrina McGranahan put the brakes on the Borderites by pitching a four-hitter with eight strikeouts.

Nicole Laxton slashed two line-drive base hits and drove in two runs to pace the offense.

Sarah Wright ripped a double, scored twice and drove in two runs.

Scout Smith, Veronica Crownover, Hope Lodell and MacKenzie Davis all singled. McGranahan added three RBI.

It took the Wolves a while to get untracked. They trailed 5-2 going into the fourth inning, then exploded for nine runs. Coupeville buried the Borderites with a seven-run seventh.

The Wolves slugged 15 hits, four by Crownover, who had a double, three runs and two RBI.

Wright bashed a three-run home run, singled and scored twice.

“All the bats were hot, but they (Crownover and Wright) really ignited the offense,” coach Kevin McGranahan said.

Smith added three hits and two RBI; Chelsea Prescott had three hits and two RBI; and Coral Caveness, McGranahan and Emma Mathusek singled.

Smith relieved McGranahan in the circle in the third inning and scattered four hits and gave up only two earned runs.

“Everybody’s got a lot of solid playing time, and we gained a lot of experience for our younger players against a big 2A school,” coach McGranahan said. “This is how we build our program, and these girls are all buying into the program and giving everything they have every game.”
