Cedarcrest struck for six first-inning runs and the Coupeville High School baseball team couldn’t recover as the Red Wolves won 10-0 in five innings in Duvall Saturday, April 8.
Cedarcrest (3-7) used a six hits, a walk and a fielder’s choice to get off to the quick start in the non-league win.
“Fairly clean game, but their pitching beat our hitting, and their hitting beat our pitching,” Coupeville coach Chris Smith said.
“We basically platooned our pitching to give everyone some work and get our rotation set for Tuesday and Wednesday,” he added.
Tuesday, April 11, Coupeville (1-1, 5-5) goes to North Mason (2-7) for a 3:30 p.m. non-conference game, then the Wolves return to Olympic League play with Chimacum (1-1, 3-2) at home at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 12.
Smith said that Hunter Smith, one of the Wolves’ top players and the team’s best pitcher, should return this week after missing several games with a back injury. The junior right-hander, however, won’t pitch.
Cedarcrest’s Aaron Davenport held Coupeville to only three hits, singles by Clay Reilly, Julian Welling and Dane Lucero. Davenport also struck out seven and walked only one.
Cedarcrest touched four Coupeville pitchers for 10 hits and scored two runs in each of the second and third innings after the big first.
Coupeville’s Matt Hilborn pitched the final inning, retiring Cedarcrest in order with two strikeouts.
